Why is my shy kitty finally exploring upstairs?

After four years, why is my shy kitty finally exploring upstairs? I have a VERY shy Russian Blue. She has lived exclusively in the basement for the last four years.

She is super friendly and lovable to our family while we are in the basement, but she never ventured upstairs. She hides from people she doesn’t know well.

Over the last two weeks, she has been coming upstairs to remind me to come to bed, lol.

This evening she parked herself in a chair in a spare bedroom upstairs and seemed uninterested in coming downstairs to bed. I’m glad that she is broadening her horizons and she seems content, but I’m kind of surprised.

Any ideas why she might drop her (very important to her) bedtime attention?

Coming out of her shell
by: Kurt (Admin)

In my experience, cats can vary their regular behaviors quite a bit, often without explanation. I've found that shy cats can gain confidence over time, and come out of their shells when they're ready.

On the other hand, a major shift in behavior can be an indication that something is wrong, so I'd monitor her and take it from there.
