Why is my cat licking odd surfaces?

by Trish

Why is my cat licking odd surfaces such as the fireplace brick? Of late, my cat is lethargic and not playing. She seems to be missing something in her diet. She is licking on brick and other surfaces in the house.

She is a totally inside calico that we found abandoned and has seemed very healthy up until now. She has all appropriate vet requirements including shots and has been spayed.

You may be right about the diet
by: William James

You may be right about something missing from her diet. Could it be pica? Pica is a disease that often causes cats to eat strange substances. It's caused by mineral deficiencies.

If she were my cat, I would get her to the vet with this particular condition in mind. In the meantime, I'd consider switching up or adding to her food. Kitten food is packed with nutrition, so as a short-term solution, you could try giving her some kitten food. I would not use it long term on an adult cat, but just for a while to see if there is any change and until you settle on a different adult cat diet.
