To spay or not to spay pregnant cat?

by Marie

I found this cat, she's maybe barely a year old or so and shes always had these really bad legs. She was born with a leg defect or something in her back legs. She can't run or jump right. (Found her as a tiny kitten barely walking on our porch)

At first, she was just a porch cat I'd feed. Then she started staying inside. Long story short, I THINK she might be pregnant. My sister-in-law wants to take her to get fixed.

It kills me to think they will abort her babies and I get depressed. My sister-in-law says it's being irresponsible to let her have them with the pain she already has every day with her bad legs. That and also I wouldn't have homes for the babies or the time for them.

My question is what to do? Spay or not to spay.

Too many kittens
by: Anonymous

I foster orphan kittens for an animal shelter and was supposed to get a pregnant cat who was due just any day. They had her scheduled for spaying and went on with the surgery and I believe they euthanized the kittens if they survived the surgery but I am not positive of that. That had to be a terrible decision to make. I was sad but was told that the truth was there are just not enough homes for cats. They no longer spay pregnant cats that I know of and I am glad of that. I am a big fan of TNR to help lower the feral cat population which is a good thing to help with the over population of kittens.

Would a vet do the procedure?
by: Jim W.

I can't make up your mind for you, but I have never seen a vet that would spay a pregnant cat. The risk of complications from the surgery on a pregnant cat is too great.
