Should I let my British Shorthair cat outside again?

Hi there, I have a British Shorthair that I started to let out in my back garden, thinking he will not venture beyond our garden. He has started climbing fences now and gone into neighbors' gardens. I started to keep him indoors but he clearly misses outside. Should I let him out?

I wouldn't, but when you do pest control and animal rescue, you get to see a lot of horrible things many people don't. There are cultural differences (I live in the US), legal considerations in some areas, and there are personal preferences. Some people let their cats roam but I would not because my experience tells me it's unsafe.
