My cat poops on the rug

I have two three year old male cats. They are neutered. One of them is fine with the litter box.


The other one is, too, but a week ago he started to poop on the rug. He's peeing in the litter box but using the rug for poop. Why is he doing this and how can I fix the problem?

My Thoughts

I'm sorry to hear that your cat is having problems, Julia. While cats can develop a preference for location or surface texture at any time, I would focus these possibilities...

1) He has a medical problem that has not yet been diagnosed.

2) He's not happy with the box (cleanliness, location, number of boxes, etc.).

3) He's got some stress in his life that is not directly related to the box.

I believe Kurt's options need to be looked into as well but also try separate litter boxes see what happens.
