My cat brings socks downstairs every night

My female cat (10 years old) digs around upstairs until she finds a sock, brings it downstairs, and then sits and starts wailing for like 2 minutes and it's been going on for months, EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT.


She always used to bring us stuff when she wants attention but it was never this often. Why does she do this?

I don't know what breed she is. She has shortish brown fur with orange, white, and grey mixed in.

Maybe she wants you to play with her with the sock? Did anyone ever roll up a sock and throw it for her in the past? Or maybe she has or used to have a toy that the sock reminds her of?

I'd be tempted to roll it up and throw it and see how she reacts.
