Cats hangs butt over edge of litter box

My cat will hang his butt over the edge of the litter box ever since he stood in his own poo. I tried to give him more space to remove the top of the box, but it makes no difference.
A new box with higher sides also made no difference... he still has his body inside the box and his butt over the edge.
My thoughts: I'm sorry to hear your cat is having trouble.
I've had cats that sometimes urinate or poop over the side before, and one solution is an uncovered, very deep box. The box has to be deep enough to allow for 4 inches (about 10 centimeters) of litter and still not allow the cat's butt to go over the side.
The problem is, they don't make a litter box deep enough, so you have to buy a plastic storage container and use that instead.
I hope that helps and please let us know how things turn out.
