Cat purring sounds like snoring

My indoor cat is eating, grooming, and drinking as normal, but he has been losing a lot of fur. He is a longhaired cat.
The problem is when he purrs, he sounds like he is snoring. The vet did not seem to be worried about it, but I am.
Is there anyone that has had the same problem with their cat please?
