Can cats be depressed?

by Marilyn
(VA)

Two days ago one of our two cats was hit by a car and died. His brother, our other cat, seems depressed. They are/were 13 years old. What can we do about this?

Yes, cats can get depressed

I'm sorry for your loss. In my experience, cats can become depressed, and many of our readers have confirmed their cats experienced depression.

Cats, like people, need time to grieve for their loss. If it goes on long enough, your vet may recommend some sort of antidepressant drug treatment.

One of our Facebook posts has over 300 comments about this topic and it may be helpful to read it. For a link to that FB post, some summary information, and more comments from other readers, please see Do Cats Grieve for the Loss of Another Cat?
